Girl and a Bear
At the beginning of XII century there was a palace on the charming Slask area. The palace was belonged to the rich and respectable church founder Piotr Wlostowic, who was a believer in peace in his own land. There were no alarming weapon noises and no knight’s gathering.
For inhabitants’ entertain and fun some bears were kept in cellars. A tamer took care of the bears and tamed them. The bear show was very popular among courtiers and court-ladies.
One of the tame bears formed a friendship in a special way with a servant Gertruda. At the same time the bear was a favorite of the Lady from palace. Her name was Maria and she was Piotr Wlostowic’s wife. The bear enjoyed fish and sometimes Maria gave Gertruda orders to bring bear its delicacy. When Gertruda went down from the Slask hill to buy a fish, the bear, who had known the purpose of the expidition was following her and waiting for the Gertruda return in a half of the way to take its delicacy.
One day Gertruda went down again to buy a fish for the bear, but this time she was late back and the bear, which was waiting for too long and got hungry. When Gertruda finally turned up it grabed at the fish basket Gertruda had. The girl as usual became to tease the bear, but in this case the bear was really hungry and flew into a rage. The furious bear stood up on its hind legs and attacked the girl. Brave Gertruda became defended herself, she took a long hiar-clip and stuck it into the bear eye. The bear roared with rage, finished off the seriously wounded girl and droped dead at its victim’s feet, weighing the fish basket.
Next day duaring a search for the missing girl people found two blood-stained bodies. The Lady from palace ordered to rise a memorial at that tragic place.
The memorial presents granite statue of the girl carring the fish and the bear lying at her feet. You can see the memorial going from Sobotka town up to the Sleza hill.
